Hello bike brain, I have this nice Alan frame from the last millennium that I would like to update with a contemporary gearset. It has Shimano 105 with 8 gears and a Shimano hub. Could I mount a SRAM 1×11 or 1×12 or this frame? Incase it is possible how do I do it?
Thanks!

Is the frame made out of aluminum lugs bonded to carbon tubes? Next question would be on spacing: is it 126 or 130mm? W/steel bikes that little bit of difference shouldn’t be an issue; just spread the rear triangle a bit. With bonded frame one can’t do that and if it’s 126mm you’re stuck living in that era of components.
Most of 1x group sets are disc specific. You’ll have to hodge together something that works with your budget. You’ll probably need a new rear wheel/hub as what you have might not take an 11s cassette, shifters, rear mech, and pref a narrow/wide front chain ring. You can go fancy and get rim brake sram AXS group and that would be the ultimate resto mod build.
Here’s my resto mod. 90s steel serotta w/threaded 1” fork. Used a thread less adapter to convert to modern stem. It’s running a 2x wireless grouper with Thomson finishing kit. Can easily take off the front mech, swap to a single ring, and run a 1x.
