It’s a bit of a parts bin component set, but the frame and paint look pretty good and Maxxis aren’t cheap tires.
The 970 is a nice lugged frame, definitely a cut above the more common 8xx series Treks.
If it fits and rides well, I’d buy it.
Edit: if you buy it, hang on to the front derailleur. It’s a bottom-pull unit with a weird Trek-specific cable stop added on to work with the cable routing from the top tube.

Definitely not a good deal, but if it fits and you’re into it it could be fine. Bikes are awesome in that they usually pay for themselves (in health benefits or even directly if you use them instead of driving or bus/train). So you’ll easily get $250 worth out of it (again if it fits and you’re stoked on the look). But for these older bikes honestly they’re not worth much at face value.

I’d buy that for $250. Hell I paid $250 for a Giant Escape from the bike co-op as my first bike (aluminum frame, shit Tourney components). Lugged, double butted True Temper tubes, MiUSA, decent components? Sick bike.
