My son (6 yo) has a little 16" bmx bike with a coaster brake rear wheel. He's been wanting to ride it over some jumps, and I don't want him to accidentally hit the coaster brake and go over the handle bars or knock his teeth out.
Can I remove the reaction arm and disable the coaster brake and have it work like a freewheel?

No you can’t disable the coaster brake by removing the arm. I’m not sure I understand your concern. I can understand a front brake locking up throwing the rider but not the rear. If a rider has the skill to go over jumps they should have the skill to know when to brake. Buying another wheel is the way to disable the brake BTW.
