  1. It looks like you could probably tune your brake caliper to have a closer bite point. That way, your lever won’t have as much play in the brake lever axis. In my experience, this also helps a bit with what you’re describing as the shift mechanism’s “circular” movement.

    It’s an old lever that has been used more than the front so it will have some play in it. Those shifters were not known for their tight machining to begin with. It’s not bad considering how old they are.
