  1. That’s how people become typical consumers.
    It’s normal.
And 130bcd is ok, especially for street. Like for fuck sake – road cyclists run it, or even smaller bcds

Yeah, some rings are just not well-made. It could be that. The comment regarding centering your chainring is probably a good starting point. If that can’t get you to less extremes of tension, you may just need a new ring.

  3. Cheaper or used and warped chainrings will do this.

Cheap cranks won’t allow the chainring to easily be mounted well-centred in the first place though.

When you install the chain ring, you cab slowly tension up the chainring bolts while trying to tap the ring into a centred position, slowly rotating the cranks under very little chain tension as you go. This can help you not be extremely off-centre, at the least.

as someone who is using an aliexpress chainring i do not have this issue (56:16). is ur chainring a narrow wide tooth chainring? if it is idk if this will help but when i initially installed my chainring the chain was stuck onto the teeth. like idk how to explain ill put 2 pics of the right way the chain lays on the chainring and the wrong way.

I splashed the cash a few months back and grabbed a used-but-like-new Sugino Zen. Out of all the chainrings I’ve used (many cheapo ones, several Miches and a couple of Omnium ones), it definitely runs noticeably the most concentrically. I didn’t centre it, just slapped it on, and the difference between the tightest and blackest points in the chain is minimal.
Just my own experience, for what it’s worth.

  6. I had the same problem before. I just replaced the bottom bracket with a smaller spindle length, from 118 to 113.

  7. make sure everything is aligned properly as best you can.. if symptoms persists, replace your chainring

  8. Not necessarily since it’s the sum of multiple tolerances. The cranks can be just as much be eccentric as the chainring. Plus there’s usually some wiggle room.

    * center your chainring as another user already recommend

    * if it is still bad, try to turn the chainring on the cranks to check if the tolerances cancel each other out

There will always be a tight spot in a drivetrain but it shouldn’t be so big that you’re ruining your drivetrain in one spot and the chain runs off on the opposite side.
