Happened on the way to work and the smaller cogwheel fell apart and got into this oval shape. I wanna try repairing it myself, but am pretty much in the beginning stage of figuring out how to do this and have no idea what type of parts to buy.

Assuming the crank spider is intact and mech not fubarred it should just be new cog and the spider bolts.

All 5 chain ring bolts failed, four are missing. Looks like your front derailleur is ripped clean off too. This is a result of neglect.
I assuming you haven’t broke anything else, this should be relatively easy and inexpensive to repair.
But given the state of things shown in the photo, I’m pretty confident other parts are beginning to go too. So it’s your choice whether you want to repair this failure or put money towards another bike.

Not that hard…if you know what you’re doing. Either take it to a professional or find a friendly Bike CoOp to teach you.
