I have a tendency to want to dive all in and get the nicest thing I can when starting a given hobby. Recognizing that I’m not financially willing to dive into the deep end of the cycling world for my first road bike I’ve been looking at the “usual” suspects. I’ve found what I believe to be decent sale prices on both the 2023 Specialized Allez Sprint Comp (2000$) and a 2024 Trek Domane AL 5 (~$1700).
With so many components to compare they seem relatively similar. Any insight on why one may be better than the other is much appreciated. I’ll be riding around Southern California (Los Angeles/Malibu) mostly.
Open to other suggestions as well.

It’s basically the same bike. The domane geo is a little more on the endurance side, but just starting, you wouldn’t really notice. The frame probably comes from the same factory, too.
Unless you have a preference on the color or shop you’re buying from, I think I’d save the $300 and get the Trek. Spend it on some decent bibs and wider tires instead.
Focus on how it feels to ride. The components are all good. The allez has a more aggressive geometry than the Domane, so it’s which you like the feel of.
I’d go with Domane. That year Allez I don’t think has the wider tire clearance, whereas the Domane is passable on gravel.
The Specialized has the older 11-speed Shimano 105 groupset. The Trek has the newer 12-speed one. Won’t really make much difference performance wise, but just something to consider if you’re into that. I’d get the Trek.
