Hey there, basically just the title. My drivetrain is definitely worn out and am wanting to change cassette, chain, and crank arms. It's 3×7 and I'm not sure of the teeth count on the gears so forgive me. BUT I don't want to be this guy that spends hundreds of dollars making a GRX gear set fit this bike. What is the easiest, most direct, apply directly to forehead type of upgrade I could do to this bike? Thanks.

If you’re OK with used and a little older there are some real good deals on ebay for groupsets. I have a 2×10 XTR groupset on one if my bikes that I got for around $60 and it’s been working great and feels way better than the X5 group it came with.

  2. A new 7 speed cassette, narrow wide chainring and new chain – around $50if you go with AliExpress 94BCD chainring. I assume that’s a 94BCD crank, not sure.

Then you can remove the front derailleur and shifter.
Would 1×7 be okay for you? There are wide range 7 speed cassettes available in the US, maybe you should consider something like that if you need more range.

    EDIT:

Stalked your profile, you in Germany? 50-60€ and you can 1x it.

  3. What is wrong with the current drive train? You need to answer that question before I can suggest any changes.

Likely a thorough cleaning of the drive train (like take it apart and scrub, rear derailleur jockeys, chainrings and chain etc). add some fresh grease to the wheel hubs. (Edited away stuff not about the drivetrain) – also you can just blast the drive train with one-step and wipe off the excess, works wonders for me.

Edit- on closer inspection your bike looks really nice. Doesn’t appear to need any upgrades unless money is burning a hole in your pocket.

  5. What’s your reason for wanting to swap your cranks? If your chainring & cassette are worn you could just swap a new cassette, chainring & chain if you’re happy with the gearing.

with regard to anyone who suggests ‘make it one-by’, I humbly suggest you procure a large and sharp pole upon which to spike their heads like kebab.

1x is shit, and 1×7 is doubleshit unless you live in pancakeland Florida.

Replace the rings, cassette, chain, and keep the 3×7, it’s a robust system that gives you plenty of options.
