I rode over a few bumps, my pedals stopped going forward, then I heard a big crunch. When I got off my bike, my rear derailleur was sliding free through the chain, which was off the chain ring.
Do I need to replace the whole derailleur or can I get away with just replacing the derailleur hanger? I am new to cycling and know very little about bike maintenance. What should I do? What would’ve caused this?

You just need a new derailleur hanger, specific to your frame. BUT – there may be something else bent or out of alignment/worn that caused this to happen. Most likely, the hanger will cure things, but I’d advise having a professional mechanic go over the drivetrain to ensure you only have to fix it once.
That’s a derailleur hangar, designed to break away to save your derailleur and bike. Look up the name brand and/or model of your bike + derailleur hangar and you should be able to find one.
