I don’t love locking this bike up because it’s so SHINY and scratch-free at 40 years old. But on a standard U rack it happens to ‘hover’ over the rack due to the cable and bottle cage. Makes me super happy.

You could wrap the U lock in bar tape if you’re worried about scratches.

But I’ll disappoint you telling that this way of locking up is a bit unsafe, you should better always catch the frame with the U-lock, at least the seat stays.

I know this is something you don’t want to hear but when I was a bike messenger (A long long time ago), I would wrap my bike in handlebar tape. Every particle of paint was covered by bar tape. I didn’t get any scratches.
This is the kind of bike that you bring inside like you would your coat & bag.

They make clear plastic stickers for this. It’s like a super thick packing tape
I would not lock that bike up anywhere.
Excellent locking technique, Sheldon Brown would be proud. With this technique, you can also turn the bike rack side crank arm back, parallel with the chainstay, hook the pedal on the rear facing side of the rack (or pole or whatever you’re locking to), which will rest the bike on the crank arm rather than the frame.
