I can’t see a way to remove the fixed hub but the other side has threads. Can I add a free wheel on the other side and essentially make a flip flop? What do I need to consider besides size if that is possible, when buying and installing a free hub?

That’s what it’s for. Buy a single speed freewheel and thread it on. Make sure it’s the same size or you might need a longer chain. If your tire is directional then take it off the rim and flip it around. Done.
