I bought these Bontrager multiport cycling shoes on close out at REI. That should’ve been my first red flag.
Wore them on a 5 mile practice commute ride through hilly urban terrain. My feet were flying off the pedals.
I am selling off of Adidas 5–10 which on the first ride, they just sawed through my socks and left me bleeding on both ankles. Very stiff shoes.
For now, I will stick to wearing my Merrill Moab hiking shoes because if anything goes wrong with the bike, I will definitely be walking back.
Footwear suggestions are welcome.

The specalized shoes are solid. I’ve been wearing Nike blazer high tops lately and I haven’t found anything better yet
Both the 5-10s and Bontragers are exclusively meant for use with cleats
Thought about just getting flats?
I have yet to find a wide toe box MTB shoe, let alone a clipless one. Specialized shoes I tried in the past looked wide but killed my toes on the sides. My gf uses altra running shoes since they are wide toe box shoes, but the bottom is rigid enough for mountain biking, I can’t recommend the shoes I currently use because they suck and I am constantly on the search for something better lol
Hahaha this is a funny post, those shoes are meant to be clipped in to specific pedals. Look up 5.10 free rider
I used those 5 10’s with spd pedals this past summer at Whistler and they were fine
I’ve got those or something close. The work fine with my Crank brothers cleats. Haven’t tried them on flats. The laces are a out 12″ too long for some reason. I have to double-double knot them.
Classic 1 star review territory here. Buys a product meant for a specific use. Uses it not as intended. Thinks product is crap
Are you looking for flats or clipless? What kind of riding will you be using them for road, gravel, commuter, xc, dh, dj? Need more info to give you my opinion on what I have tried or what I know nothing about.
None of the square-toe box minimalist/barefoot type shoes have stiff enough soles. In the winter I just wear Keens… Wide enough toe, stiff sole,… Maybe one that doesn’t have a deeply lugged sole would work better.
