What has happened? Does it have a quick fix?
I'm quite inexperienced with repairs.
This is the front brake btw. The rear brake does not have this piece sticking out as far as I can see.

That’s a pad spring that’s come out from the side of the brake pads due to pad wear. Everything looks quite worn. Front brakes are important. Pad replacement not hard – remove split pin on right hand side of image between the two torx bolts, replace pads.
Probably the spring that sits between the pads. Buy a new set of pads and they’ll come with one.
Your pads are most likely completely worn out. This looks like part of the spring.
Take the wheel out and examine it. The only thing I can think of is the end of one of the pad springs has become bent somehow and is interfering with the rotor. This would also mean your pads are likely to need replacing
