Leaving camp at around 8:30, I continued along another secondary route (B7076) that paralleled the main carriageway (A74)…which, like the ride from Penrith to Carlisle, was wide and very lightly travelled…likely for the same reason…which made for an easy and surprisingly flat ride through Ecclefechan and into Lockerbie, where some locals helped me find a very nice place for a hearty breakfast.
The route north continued along B7076 for another 45km’s to the town of Crawford, where I split off onto a single lane road for another 12km;s when I accessed A73 to continue north….all the while the clouds were delivering heavy drizzle off and on.
Although I was gaining in elevation, it was very gradual…which surprised me given the highlands all around…but A73 followed the River Clyde for 25km’s to the town of Carnwath…where I switched to Calla Road and followed it all the way to my campground at Linwater Caravan Park, between Livingston and Edinburgh…but not without once again getting turned around a number of times trying to make it through surprisingly busy and complicated Livingston….which was frustrating enough…but I was running against the clock as I tried to get to the campground before the office closed. As it was, I contacted the owner, who agreed to hang around until I got there…some 20 minutes after they were going to close at 7pm.
The caravan park was very well kept, if not some what expensive, but given the conditions and my options, it worked out well…as the facilities were excellent and almost brand new.
The drizzle that followed me all the way from north of Lockerbie stopped just long enough to allow me to setup camp…after which I was able to do some much needed laundry while making dinner and charging stuff in the well equipped and spacious dining room.
I was very happy to have made 140km’s on that day!
