There is no adhesive in typical patch kits for butyl-tubes. The patches are vulcanised on the tube. That’s why you have to let it dry first before you stick the patch on. It just works completely different.
I’m not saying adhesive won’t work at all but it’s just completely different.
I’ve got rubber cement in the crafts department at Walmart, i had the same issue.
