Is this belt drive conversion xbiking?

Some years ago, I did a fun little belt drive conversion project on an old, broken road bike frame.
I always wanted to convert a conventional steel frame to disc brakes because I didn’t want to accept the „hipster tax“ that brands like Schindelhauer bikes put on their belt compatible frames. But I really wanted to have a belt driven single speed bike to use around town. So I did it on my own in roughly this order:

• searched for a bike with broken dropouts
• created a CAD model of the existing frame
• constructed new dropouts and tube inserts with mainly 4, maybe 5 goals in my mind:
• repairing the broken part of the frame -> saving a frame from being thrown away
• adding a reversible coupling element for the belt drive
• adding a mechanism to tighten the belt according to Gates Carbon Drive‘s requirements

• converting a 126mm spaced frame to a 120mm single speed hub
  (5. having a lot of fun time with CAD and my welder :P)

• based on the CAD data, I had some the dropouts laser cut first, then sent them to someone who added some 3D geometry on the dropouts with a mill and manufactured the other parts. Couldn’t do this step on my own because I didn’t have these in my workshop back in the day. This has changed recently, so now I can do milling and turning on my own!

• cut the frame according to my dropout construction

• TIG welded the new parts into the frame

• checked alignment, which was close to perfect and only needed minor adjustments. Look at the rear tire clearance to the brake bridge 🙂

• had the frame powder coated in matte black

• threw on some nice parts to complete the bike

• last step was finally RIDING THE DAMN BIKE!!!

I still have the bike and never had any problems with belt and dropouts 🙂
