Today I decided to play a rural Europe map with a 3 minute time limit. My plan was to see if I could race to a good enough clue to figure out where I was in that time. I failed to do so in the remote Icelandic wilderness of the first round, but whilst staring at the black dotted line that represented my guess, I came up with an idea. The next half an hour was spent trying to figure out whether it was the best idea I’d had since the straight line mission itself, or whether I’d completely lost the plot. The jury is still out…
PLAY ALONG WITH THESE GAMES: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to Youtube to watch my attempt before you see the result. This way you don’t ruin the game or the video!

This doesn't need the straight line mission aspect, it's different enough. You should just hike it, then you could deal with many different problems and have less legal issues. Therefore less planning, quicker trips and it makes it possible to do all 5 guesses!
"Pretty damn easy" … famous last words …
Doesn't have to be straight line for me, just from a to be, depending on the distance by foot, bike, train or whatever
Do a high stakes geoguessr game with rainbolt. loser has to straightline their worst guess.
10/10 would watch! I think it's a great idea!
As much as I would love to see you doing the one in The Netherlands, It's going straight throught national wildlife reserves so you might want to rethink on that one. 🙂
DO IT!
23:10 and then just marks a point 1.1miles down a straight road after finding the location🤣
That impression was top.
You're right that those kinds of stone fences aren't that common in the Faroe Islands. But actually they are very common in the specific village where you were placed (Skálavík). Bit of a funny coincidence .
Straight line your geo guess, but you can only have a tenner in your pocket
The amount you're allowed to deviate from the line should depend on how long the line is. 5 feet for every mile? 25 feet for a five mile line? 100 feet deviation allowed for 20 mile line.
Your understanding of Swedish is excellent! 😀
You are missing a trick. If you want to encapsulate your channel then it's straight line through countryside, no roads through towns/cities. ;o)
Pure raging if you guess Australian Outback and its in South Africa for the real one.
Do it – this is the best idea
Tom sees a straight line in The Netherlands with a 15 mile kayak section in the middle: "I'd be buzzin' to do that!" Err… Tom?
I like your best of with no moving, but what about this: You can move but you have to straight line mission the worst of the 5. Impossible missions would be discarded obviously, but otherwise if it's possible, you have to complete worst of. Would add a level of urgency to maintain excellence. Edit: You'd have to be able to move but there would need to be a time limit – long enough to definitively figure out rough area and even nail a few, but not long enough to be able to nail it every time. That would be exciting viewing IMO.
I'd like a mission in Iceland!
Please do this
I would laugh if you did the 47 yard one.
Maybe just use a compass bearing from the line as your only navigation aid to try to find the destination. Finding the destination will still be a right mission for these but without having to stay on a line directly.
Genius idea!
Here's a fun extension of this idea. In any run, even if it's a perfect score, use the line defined by the two points. You can extend the line however you like and decide where a good start and end point could be, but the direction is fixed. That way all your runs would be useful. It's up to you to decide if the final line may not include those points on the walked path, or if you have to physically pass through them.
That British mum meeting another British mum in the supermarket impression is SCARILY ACCURATE you are too funny Tom
The ‘not Europe’ round in Russia, was in fact, just about Europe as it was just to the east of the main ural ridge line
This idea is an absolutely phenomenal one. I would give an arm and a leg to see this come to fruition!!
Also, your innate guessing ability after years of not playing regularly is still pretty impressive Tom
Brilliant idea. Do it.
So here's what you do:
You get a friend who's into straight line hikes too, you do a competitive geoguessr game, then you have to hike from your guess to the goal and your final score is the distance you hiked PLUS your deviation from the line (lowest score wins).
Rather than the shortest line, walk the line of your choice.
The Netherlands line goes through Oostvaardersplassen, which is a nature reserve, and I don't think you're allowed to go anywhere you want there.
the Netherlands is a nice idea, the only problem is the highways that run all throughout the Netherlands.
And all the towns and cities.
You just aint gonna find any straight line that is doable in the Netherlands without having to cross major highways.
Or traintracks.
And if you do that and they see you, you get a big fine.
Maybe in the north, like Groningen to Friesland to Noord Holland via de Afsluitdijk?
Or peddling across het Ijsselmeer?
Ending in Den Helder for example? Or starting from there, and then to the German border?
Perhaps ending at Bourtange?
I think there is a line there which might swerve around all the major cities and towns up there.
But still, it crosses a heck of a lot of major motor ways and what have you.
I think it is just impossible in the Netherlands to do any kind of straight line mission.
Definitely a good idea
Hey I can potentially help you with the straight-line on Iceland. Both the logistics and capturing experience, send me a message if your interested and I'll get you in touch with the madman that can make it happen
I would say, don't worry about your score when it comes to choosing your line. You want something that's interesting enough to be doing a video on but simple enough to be safe and doable. I'd say, have your 50 goes, and handpick one out of those 50 that fits those criteria.
Also, I don't think having 2/3 of the mission being rowing across Markermeer would make for very interesting content, unless maybe you're planning on entertaining us by singing the whole time. Straight line missions are exciting due to the variations in terrain and the threat of getting caught being where you shouldn't be. You can't just think about how simple it would be to do the line, you also have to consider if it will be interesting content.
DO IT
narrow down the location to what you want of course. Then I would do no move, no time limit, and just do it on the first round that comes up. The caveat here being you are allowed to veto anything that you think would be too easy or too hard. So just go and guess until you get a line that seems to be the right amount of challenge.
I don't really have an idea, but it sounds great! I am part of the geoguesser and (even more so!) geodetective audience and sometimes skip on the straight line mission stuff. But I would for sure watch the whole adventure in this case.
Tom, i was watching an old Geoguesser Video of yours, you kinda cane up with this idea already: after your last guess you said you woudnt do that in a straight line (across brazil). it was in the video of the complete diverse world map: https://youtu.be/izjFsRDbt5k
its a great idea tho, id be looking forward to an adventure like that
It’s a fantastic idea. Can’t wait for it to happen!
0:01 XD Thats so funny yet so true.Cheers to British Society!!!
Agree with many of the comments to give yourself some choice from a collection of geoguesser attempts. No need to constrain yourself to the shortest line if others would make for a better adventure.
Iceland would be epic!
Speaking of straight line missions in Iceland. You could do a relatively simple one with no obstacles in the path, it starts on the southern coast of Iceland and ends on the coast of Antarctica. Easy
Will we get the no roads missions again? :3
i have an idea, how about walking a single street or road, motorway, not sure how a motorway would work, but how about a river, from the spring to it's end in a lake or sea/ocean, you can take a canoe or the like, but rivers start with a drizzle, don't they?

I'm late to the show, but I LOVE the idea!
please make a map of only locations that were part of your videos (could be straight line, stuffed tenner in pocket, kick a football across country, etc.)
