Hello,

I just purchased a Trek Checkpoint SL 5 gen 3 and I am curious about the possibility of upgrading the freehub body. It came with these wheels:

Bontrager Paradigm SL Wheelset

For some reason the site doesn't list the model for the rear hub – presumably because it can vary maybe? I also don't see any part numbers or markings on the hub itself – though I haven't taken off the cassette to check.

Anyway, I'm hoping there might be an upgraded freehub body with additional, out of phase pawls that I might be able to use to increase the amount of engagement points without re-lacing the wheel or buying a new wheelset altogether. I know these OEM formula hubs don't typically offer much in the way of upgrade-ability but I figured I would ask since I can't find anything online.

  1. You would need to swap the entire hub for a new one. Not cheap and not really cost effective on a $200 wheel.
Pawl engagement isn’t a huge deal on road/gravel bikes. The increased engagement adds drag in most designs so riders usually pick the faster rolling over engagement
