    I’m currently in the process of breathing new life into this rescued bike — how would you deal with the rust spots?

      I deal with by not dealing with it.
      Some patina belongs to a bike like that and it won’t affect stability usually.
      Most methods of trying to fix paint look worse than doing nothing.
      If you like, you can poor some corrosion-resistant oil inside the frame tubes, to make it a little bit more weather resitant.

      Spray a bit of WD-40 on the rust, and then scrub it with a ball of aluminium foil. It’ll lift light rust like that right off

      If you’re not planning to repaint, I would just ignore it. It’s just surface spots. If you’re really wanting to clean up the rust, I would say wire brush it and get some rustoleum rust converter stuff, then tape it off and spray paint it black

      Awesome frame!
      For small spots I don’t bother. Medium spots I wire wheel to shiny steel, polish, and wax. I live in a dry desert though.
      If you choose to paint the BB, luckily that area will be covered by the chainring so the paint job doesn’t need to be perfect. Wire wheel the flaking paint, underlying rust, and make it shiny. Metal primer and spray black.

      For surface rust I just use a wire brush and some WD40. You could also use foil. If it’s bigger patches, you can use rust converter. If you have super nasty bolts you can replace them with new bolts easily and cheaply.
