The Headwaters Trail is a multi-day ride on bridleways and greenways in one corner of Yorkshire.
The circular trail takes you to the moors where three rivers rise – the River Calder above Todmorden in the South Pennines, the River Aire above Malham in the Yorkshire Dales and the River Don above Penistone in the Peak District.
The Headwaters Trail is 350kms long and is a unique ‘off-road’ experience as no other trail in Britain traces the flow of three rivers each with their own unique landscape. From packhorse tracks laid in the 1500’s to canal towpaths built in the 1780’s and traffic-free greenways on railway cuttings dismantled in the 1960’s, the Headwaters Trail makes for a rich and varied riding experience.
There is an organised event in May for bikepackers or opt for the supported ride with campsite, luggage transfer and artisan food vans – a bit like a festival but you have to ride a long way to get there!
The Yorkshire Divide website has maps and trail info to guide you. The gpx file will be available to anyone by May 2024

I am in!
Brilliant! Can't wait for May
i'm in , inspiring video …..looking forward to some wild camping and loads of cycling
Buzzing about this event, really looking forward!
Back from riding the event over the weekend. Absolutely brilliant experience. In parts, quite challenging for a fully loaded bike packer but there's plenty of short cuts to take if needs be…. and I certainly did at times. And my goodness… I don't regret taking extra cable ties and Velcro straps! Super Kudos to Adrian who organized the event and researched a route visiting so many marvelous places… picture postcard canal side villages, awe inspiring reservoirs, soul refreshing pristine woodland glades…. We came, we saw and we really lived! And we will return! π
Excellent video, the drone shots captured the scenery beautifully. Hope to get to some of those places.
Just got back from doing this over 3days with the lads, camping each night.
Really tough on fully loaded gravel bikes. A 29er may possibly be better suited, although we got down all the descents it was pretty hairy at times. Not helped by rain all day on the 3rd day.
Beautiful well put together route. Would definitely recommend but itβs without doubt a challenge on a gravel bike π .
Iβd imagine the organised events mega. Especially with the luggage transfer π
