I've had this schwinn urban/commuter bike for 7 years and have replaced the cassette and chain once, along with brake pads. It's getting harder to ride it beyond 30 miles. Should I look at upgrading the groupset or buy a new road bike. Not sure about the resale value of my bike. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Does your rear brake work? It looks like the cable is not in the right position and is being pulled, possibly lightly applying the brake as well.

In terms of resale value the bike isn’t worth much, upgrading to a whole new group will probably end up costing you in time and money probably nearly close enough to buying something with a higher spec that’s used would be worth the happiness factor to give up a bit of extra cash.

if it were me I’d retire the bike and keep it in good condition as a “bad weather” bike you can ride in all-seasons i’d probably leave it set up for the winter, put some cheap but durable fenders on it… and then it’s still great. Not everyone wants to ride in the winter either though, but still a good rain bike.

if you’ve been riding this for 7 years you’d really appreciate something more in the mid tier that’s used but in great shape. that’s just me though – I get that you can feel attachment to your bike, but I personally wouldn’t bother putting a new groupset on this.

You mentioned you ride it for 30 miles, that seems like a lot to me for a bike like this and you probably should of upgraded bikes awhile ago if you ride that far regularly.
