I remembered that it’s better to clamp the seatpost than the top tube, and I put a towel between it as to not scratch it. Connected a rod between the handlebar and the post to stabilize the steerer. Am I doing anything wrong?

You might check out the Hirobel frame clamp if you want some more clamping versatility. It’s the next purchase on my dream list. Wait—I just checked the site to make sure I spelled it right and it was $25 off, so I bought it.
Oh that’s how the steering stabilizer rod attaches. Never used mine
