I am the proud owner of a road bike from the 1970s (according to the previous owner).I bought it three years ago for 200€ (around 217$) from the first owner here in Germany.
It consists of a Columbus frame with Castelli branding and a (to my knowledge) complete Shimano 600 group set.
Does somebody have some ways of identifying the type of Columbus frame in the bike? I know how to distinguish SL and SLX frames by the way the inside of the frame is made but really don’t want to disassemble the bike.
If someone can help, that would be great.
I am also really happy to get any information about the bike I can get, so if someone knows something that would be awesome! Maybe someone can also estimate what the bike is worth?

What is the seat post size? Also, those beautiful flutes will channel any outside water into the seat tube when set this low

  2. If it was made in the 1970s it DEFINITELY isn’t SLX because SLX wasn’t made until the late 80s.
Also the Columbus decal would say so. That one isn’t.
Also that version of Shimano 600 is from the early-mid-80s.
The seatpost size is the most reliable but it doesn’t take into account when a framebuilder mixes tubesets.

Based on the frame construction it looks like a mix between SL and Aelle. They used to build those kind of setups for mid-pro bikes 🙂

  4. Pictures of the dropouts and bb would suffice. It would at least provide provenance of the bike, to some extent.

Willing to bet anything that bike is not from the 70s which is a good thing, late 80s was simply a better time for steel frames and this one looks great

If the bottom bracket is Italian thread I’d say it’s pretty safe that billato made it
