I currently ride a 2016 ALUM Trek Slash 8. Trek is having massive sales right now on their site and I'm very torn.

I'm looking at a carbon Trek Slash 9.8 XT: https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/mountain-bikes/trail-mountain-bikes/slash/slash-9-8-xt-gen-5/p/36732/

My current 27.5 bike needs a full drivetrain replacement which will probably be ~$900. So I could be getting a solid XT groupset upgrade from my current SRAM X1 groupset. The suspension on my current bike is also mid-level rockshox (Lyrik RC and Monarch+ RC) but it seems that this bike is also mid-level rockshox but current generation suspension.

The $4k price tag for a full carbon frame, carbon wheels, and XT groupset etc, in addition to being a 29er seems like an insane deal that would bring me up to modern biking.

My current bike isn't worth that much for resale. I think I could get 1.5k in it's current state. I could just buy a new bike instead haha

Would I be nuts to pass this up for $4k?

  1. I doubt you could get $1.5k for your current one (although I don’t know even which currency you’re talking about so I’m really guessing). But yes that bike would be a great step up. I wouldn’t throw too much money into the older bike, personally.
