Jay Wayne Jenkins, also known as Jeezy, was born on September 28, 1977, in Columbia, South Carolina. Jenkins moved to Atlanta, Georgia as a child, where he stayed with various family members when his parents separated. Jeezy had a burning desire to escape the dead-end life that seemed unavoidable for some inner-city children. He was drawn to rap music because hip-hop artists and their songs seemed to be the only cultural vehicle that told the truth about the lives of young people of color in the inner city. Jenkins later became a music producer, but he didn’t stay behind the scenes for long. In 2001, he released his first album under the rap name “Lil’ J,” and by 2003, he had become Young Jeezy, one of the most popular rappers in Atlanta, the South, and the entire United States. His major label debut, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 1,O,1 debuted at Number 2 on the Billboard 200, selling 172,000 copies in its first week and ultimately becoming platinum. Young Jeezy has garnered numerous honors over his career. He earned a B,E,T Award for Best Collaboration for his song “Put On” with Kanye West, and also, he has received four Grammy nominations.
