I just got this frame about a month ago and have been building it up. First time really doing all this. So I’m learning along the way.
I purchased the cheapest derailleur and cassette I could, just to get the bike running for now. Will upgrade later on.
It’s a TY300 Shimano with a 7 speed cassette.
The bike shifts fine, it rides.
But looking at other bikes, it looks like my derailleur is positioned too far forward towards the cranks.
Maybe my chain is too short?
I didn’t count the links, but went off feel of the chain. It felt really loose so I took links out. Then some more. I think it was 116 links and I removed maybe 6. But not sure.

Seems you might have a few issues. I think the derailleur isn’t installed on the hanger correctly. There should be a small tab on the derailleur mount that catches on the hooked part of the hanger, this will engage the spring and stop the derailleur from rotating so far forward. It also looks like you have the b tension screw wound all the way in, and your chain is probably too short. It’s also not a 1x derailleur with no clutch so it will fall
Off easily. But I would start by getting the derailleur bolted on properly and go from there!
Dont think so. Unscrew slightly, rotate clockwise around the mount screw, and a notch on the derailleur should rest on the hanger edge, stopping it swinging forwards. Then screw down. If that doesnt help, please supply closer pictures.
I would loosen the screw on the derailleur hanger and twist the whole thing clockwise about 90 degrees
My first thought was, is your chain too short?
It doesn’t look bad to me. I can see it’s almost on the biggest cog and the derailleur still has room to stretch.
On the smallest cog it will be down more.
It could be that the chain is a little too short but if it shifts I don’t see an issue.
If I were you I would look up Park Tools YouTube page for their Tech Tuesday videos.
They have on just about every topic. Including sizing a chain.
No. The flat tab that connects to the rest of the derailleur has a little notch on the back, that notch needs to sit above the derailleur hanger where the b limit screw would normally contact.
Once installed correctly, that flat metal tab should be almost parallel with the ground.
