My first trip abroad was to Kenya, where a friend picked me up and we drove north from Nairobi. As we passed through the suburbs I got excited when I saw a banana plant poking over someone's fence – "Is that a banana plant? It is! That's a bloody banana!!" I'd never seen anything so exotic, so tropical, such a good example of not being in cold, wet Britain; it was very, very exciting. My friend nearly crashed the car because of laughing at me.
