Is cycling getting too fast? After the Tour de France director raised this concern, we’re diving into the debate. Could the extreme speeds during races be causing the terrible crashes we’ve seen this year? Is this really the problem, and what can be done to make racing safer? Plus, we’re sharing bad news out of Canada, a new King KOM, and how bike lanes are making roads safer for everyone. πŸš¦πŸ‘€

  1. What do you make of pro cycling being "too fast"? πŸš΄β€β™‚πŸ’¨ What should be done about it? πŸ’¬ Let us know down below πŸ‘‡

  2. Pretty sure the average cycling speed on Strava I read the other month was about 12mph. Should be more worried about how pretty much how most motorists probably drive above the speed limit even if by a few mph.

  3. If you think present-day racers posting higher averages than Lance aren't using something you're quite silly. Using carbon monoxide as they are presently admitting is very much doping. It is self limiting but doping nonetheless.

  4. At least here in southern California you have to ride aggressively and fast at times because people in cars or ebikes/mopeds won't be respectful or take you into consideration. It sucks but sometimes you just have to but its not for everyone you have to be quick to avoid accidents or be willing to bunny hop over sidewalks or obstacles

  5. 12:20. Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Recognize that name? He's the brother of Rob Ford, that train wreck of a mayor of Toronto back in 2010. Nuts runs in their family. BTW, Doug Ford used to be a drug dealer.

Electing Ford as Premier is as crazy as electing Trump for President.

  6. Tour de France speeds. Extrapolate the curve and you will see when the speeds no longer rise.

In Juniors, there is a gear length limit. I propose for road cycling racing, the gear Eddy had. 53 x 13 , 110 inches. Then let us see. Regina Extra Ti. 13 – 21 6 speed. Still got a bike with this.

  7. I ride almost every day (commuting, training and racing) and on almost every ride I am endangered at least once by a vehicle driver, often with them purposeful "sending a message to me" with their vehicle – so that is my bias here. However, early in the show when talking about Doug Ford's approach to bike lanes it was indicated that there is no evidence that bike lanes add to congestion, But later in the show it was mentioned that a study found that bike lanes slowed vehicle traffic thereby improving safety conditions – in other words creating vehicle congestion. I really think that answer here is for cyclist to recognize that emerging multimodal transportation does reduce the priority for vehicle traffic, especially single occupant vehicles. If we recognize this and show some empathy and maybe even provide some helpful suggestions about how all modes of transport can co-exist we can begin to shift the "war-on-bikes" rhetoric to something like "we can design transportation that meets the needs all users, and that all users can participate equitably". I know that it is a complicate issue, but the conversation is simply stalled as we have all become entrenched in our positions.

  8. Not sure it will be possible to implement ways to decrease speeds, I think there will be a lot of resistance from cyclists, bike manufacturers, fans etc. Maybe the next frontier is protective gear to decrease severity of injuries. Also think better route planning where possible and adding protective crash barriers on sections that are high risk and making sure the road surface on these sections is in good shape [i.e. the section that took out Remco, Jonas, Primoz and others early in the season comes to mind].

  9. Like most companies Strava appear to be getting greedier and greedier. It actually cost them my subscription when they put more and more features behind a paywall.

  10. Regarding average speed, mine has certainly dropped over the years but is higher when I get back into town but drops down as I ride through due to taking more care and being aware of others. This situation is not always reciprocated.

  11. I strongly feel like support cars don't belong in bike racing. The greatest threat to all cyclists has always been cars. Why would you allow them driving around inside a bike race?

Coming from a motocross and sportbike back round it's always been weird to me how little protection we ride in on bikes. Obviously heat is the biggest issue with bulking up on leathers and padding. Courses should be planned out better but at some point there's a level of risk you need to accept with racing. Just wearing lycra still isn't enough to prevent me from hitting 50+mph on a mountain descent but the damage of crashing is certainly on my mind while doing it.

  12. Disc brakes lockup at speed hence the increase in crashes that correlates with the introduction of disc brakes. Remove disc brakes the speed will somewhat drop and riders will start braking earlier instead of braking right in the corners. Disc brakes are the culprit

  13. Ontario province premier is a populist clown. All he wants is service his rich friends in detriment of healthcare, housing, road safety, cost of living.

  14. The fact that cyclists go very fast and take risks is due to the fact that they do not impose or promote safety equipment in races. They must give in to the implementation of protectors in the suits and accept that we may also have aerodynamic gains but a safer cyclist.

  15. Everything about the way current roads and traffic laws are designed and built is a result of the corrupt influence of the automobile industry on laws and lawmakers. That bicyclist should feel bound by laws that are there to actively put them in danger is no morally absurd

  16. I dread rural straight roads. If 40km/h is allowed, than SUVs overtake you at 80km/h or more, sometimes half a meter from you. I fell 2 times from my this year when I kept too close to the edge because of that. Sometimes I take train because of the weekend speedy drivers (while cycling that segments early in the morning)

  17. Unsupported racing would be great, would push for reliability perhaps even push developments in toolkits and fast and easy repairs instead of constant pita solutions that home and professional mechanics curse out.
