My aim is to work my way through a checklist of ‘The 100 Greatest Climbs in the UK’. How long it will take me? I don’t know, but it’ll be fun finding out.

  1. Dude! That was EPIC! Take it from someone who did a lot of road riding. 9% and 15% grades are VERY tough. And you did it on a GRAVEL BIKE. Lord almighty. Now, forget everyone else's time up the Beacon. 9:43 is Your time. Come back next year at this time and beat that time. Oh, yeah and Tracie is Brilliant! She's so supportive. If I had asked my first (and now ex) wife to drive an hour and a half to film me climbing some hill she would have told me to go f myself. 🙂

  2. Nice work Ryan , as for Toyota Land Cruiser and the very very close pass at the top of the climb GY07DTZ , you should report them , irresponsible driver with their near side wing mirror folded in should be reported with your video evidence , folded in to ensure they get as close as possible to cyclist

  3. 15:22 chills ❤ brilliant choice of music. you look great climbing out of the saddle, you've got a good rhythm and you look really in the zone. Really well done and welcome to the hill climb addiction. Can't wait to see what's next. There should be plenty of the Surrey and Kent climbs that should be doable in a day trip for you.

  4. Great effort Ryan. Watching your cycling videos genuinely keeps me at it on my bike too. Need to do more IRL rides, although I don’t fancy sharing the road with drivers like the one who passed you at the end!

  5. Great job Ryan! Why is watching someone climbing a bike with a bangin' tune (I'm down with the kids) so satisfying? Best bit was when you were pedalling in time with the beat :-p

  6. Great vid as always. I'm envious of those hills. Over here in Denmark we struggle to get anything above 5% 🙂 And so great of your wife to be so supportive in your journey. Remember to buy her some flowers once in a while 🙂

  7. Well done Ryan. Have loved watching your progress and you've provided me with hours of entertainment on my road to recovery. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into these videos, (and you wife for tagging along with the camera).
If you want an ultra challenge for next year, Chase the Sun entry opens in a few days ;-). It's 200 miles trying to get from the East coast of England to the West coast before the sun sets. You could compare a cycling ultra to your running ultras 😉

  8. I'd love to ride Winnets Pass in the peak district with you. I'm riding back into fitness after 8 years off the bike. Winnets pass an otherworldly place – could be from another planet… Some sportives do it (but make sure they go up, not just down!!)

  9. Well done Ryan, great effort and great time. Never done it myself. I second the bike computer, if you have the money get a power meter as well and get on Strava. You can also get the 100 climbs as an app and will automatically log your times once completed via Strava. I have only been riding for 1.5 years now, I have lost 2 stone and in better health. My challenge this year was hills so I entered the Dragon Ride Gran Fondo in Wales which I completed in June, in myself I smashed it and I’m now addicted. I’m in Chelmsford which is not far from you, at the end of Feb there is Hell Of The Ashdowns in Kent so it’s close and the following week is the Kentish Killer (beginning of March) which you should have a go at. I have been looking at the Fred Whitton which you have to enter by ballot. Have a look, once you start, you can’t stop

  10. I am sure someone told you before, but most cleats have adjustable resistance for click in and out. Nothing to do with new pedals…
Congrats for the successful climb and great support from your wife!

  11. Yeah, there's something about climbing hills that you just don't get from the flat. I love 'em. Shame you live in the flattest party of the country! 😂 Moving out of London to Gloucestershire two years ago means I'm constantly climbing hills with a huge sweaty smile on my face.

Anyway, well done. More IRL riding please. As you get used to bike handling you'll find them easier. Part of the physical stress of riding them is just your unfamiliarity with handling the bike. When you're more comfortable with that, the climbs will be easier.

  12. Well done Ryan
I would say 65%ish of people who do ltb get off and walk up the beacon,
Love you are such a enthusiastic new cyclist
You may want to change your bike or gearing for something better suited to road cycling going forward,
Would make it considerably easier for you 🚴🏼🚴🏼👍🏻

  13. Brilliant effort Ryan!! All that Zwifting is certainly paying dividends!! You Mention Mount Ventoux – I have been lucky enough to have been over to France to tackle this beast –
The first completing The Club Cingles – 3 different roads up Ventoux completed within 24hrs of starting – Highly recommend it
The second being to complete the Ventouxman Triathlon – Both are good fun(!)
All the best with ticking off the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs – When you get to the West of Scotland – give me a shout and I will come and join you – and suffer together!! 🥵

  14. Hope you realise that once you climb this 100 from the original Simon Warren book, there is then another 100, plus an X-List (X-rated climbs list) and then top 100 climbs for each region! This challenge might take you a few years 😄

  15. Ryan you absolutly need a computer for the bike…and while you're at it. Get a backlight whit radar in it…its a gamechanger to know when traffic are rushing up your backside… i cant ride without the radar now…
