Unfortunately this old 600 has a bent arm and a lot of lateral play. It’s had a long life. I just need to get this bike going and looking for an affordable option. It’s of course friction. Will a long cage work? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Look for a bicycle collective in your town. They’ll have a box of derailleurs for $5-10 that will work fine.
With friction, you have a ton of options, stay within the chain wrap capacity and go nuts. Any shimano/microshift/etc stuff will get you rolling. Acera, tourney, Claris, and up should work fine with that freewheel and friction shifting
Shimano altus
For a “the cheapest possible but new, just for the fun of it” build I used a SunRace M2T. It’s a copy of the old Shimano Tourney, looks almost identical in shape to your 600 (albeit in black), costs less than 10 €/$ new and works great. I use it with a 7 speed 11-28 Shimano cassette and friction shifters.
Most big parts manufacturers have a $10 – $20 rear derailleur option. Microshift’s M21 can be had for like $12.
