Drop it into the little ring with me for ~5 hours of climbing seven peaks north of Lyon, France. In order to see what Lyon had to offer, I rented a steel touring bike with a triple chain ring and rack mount for 48 hours. While the bike employed touring tech, it was uniquely qualified to serve as a mountain goat. Mont D’Or and Mont Thou served as the major peaks throughout the ride, sitting just across the Saone River. Getting there involved a really interesting tunnel with its own segregated bicycle lane. There were some stunning views, hair-raising descents through narrow streets and blind turns, and more than a few gunshots!

Lyon, the capital city in France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, sits at the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers. Its center reflects 2,000 years of history from the Roman Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules, medieval and Renaissance architecture in Vieux (Old) Lyon, to the modern Confluence district on Presqu’île peninsula. Traboules, covered passageways between buildings, connect Vieux Lyon and La Croix-Rousse hill.
