Well, no idea if it’s a freewheel or not. HOWEVER, 12 s cassettes and older frewheel bodies are always a gamble. It could work, sometimes you need to mill off a few mm from the lowest gear to make it work, but sometimes it just won’t work at all… If you have a freewheel body (where U put the cassette on) I would order and try, maybe you’re really lucky. But I would say, 7/10 times you’ll need a new rear wheel. Additionally, the chain line could be an issue too when doing a 1×12 conversion. Good luck. XD
Looks like a cassette to me. We’ll see when you get out the rear wheel. Since an 8-speed cassette is already mounted, 12 speed will fit too.
Your frame is likely not wide enough for a 12s cassette. Most of them are designed to work with Boost rear hubs (148mm)
I would suggest an 11s Deore drivetrain, you really don’t need 12 gears, or even 11.

The freewheel/hub needs to be in the Shimano11 standard.
Otherwise the cassette won’t fit and will rub on the frame.
Only way to fix it is to het a new wheel.
On another topic, why don’t you get CUES group?
12 speed is a gimmick in most instances, more expensive and less durable.
11speed CUES U6000 is way more durable as the chain rings are thicker, the special ramps allow you to change gears while pedaling with full force, and it should be about the same price, while being newer.
But again. It requires SH11 freewheel.
I was in the same ballpark and went for a 2×11 setup instead of 1×12 or 1×11.

As for your question; it should fit since it’s an 8 speed.
You can always take measurements before committing to a purchase; search for the manufacturer of that 12 speed cassette and start measuring.
Your bike most likely has a HG cassette and Shimano 12spd is Micro Spline (MS) so it won’t fit on older HG freehubs.
11 speed is the highest you can put on without needing a new rear hub.
Definitely a cassette but echoing the other comments, please go 11 speed.
12 speed will just give you headaches if you’re not going to use the Shimano OEM cassette and if your wheel is an older standard. It also requires tons of tuning and precision to get working
