I broke the little trigger on the left shifter. To be honest, I don't use the left shifter that much. What's the easiest way I can fix an issue like this? I'm very new to biking and repair but I've been brave enough to fix and patch a few tubes.

It seems like I’d have to replace the brake, all four cables, and both shifters to accomplish this. Do I have that right?
Or is it possible to remove the brakes without cutting the cable?
