Installed a new 58t chainring. Previously had the Brompton 54t chainring, but I found the ratios really off for my pedaling style. I couldn’t find the right cadence and shifted frequently. The 58t seems to have helped that.

I don’t recommend going any higher than 58t because it might affect the fold.

  1. Did you have to get a bigger chain for this modification?
I find that I don’t get enough speed and I’m pedalling like crazy so this may help…

  2. Wow, that looks serious business!

On my cheapo (apologies for the nickname) winter bitch – a 20“ folder for < 200 € and ridiculously durable for that – I stepped up from 44 to 61 teeth and that made it a different bike altogether (people waiting with me at traffic lights always secretly try to find the electric support units 😇) …

… 54 to 58 still is a solid 7% gain and depending on your cycling style and flexibility regarding your cadence can turn meh into wow.

  3. I used to ride with a 61t chainring for the exact same reasons until my rear triangle hinge broke. The guy at the repair shop told me that there was too much lateral torque from that ring size which probably contributed to the hinge failure, so just be careful and inspect the hinge pins and the bushings regularly.
