You can cycle from Euston in central London to Holborn, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.

The route is 2.2km long (1.35 miles) and makes use of Cycleway 27’s protected lanes on Tavistock Place as well as other quiet streets.

  1. last few weeks I've kept on finding quite a bit of Tavistock Place (both the cycle and car lanes) completely blocked off for construction. When that happens, it's less clear what the best route is and depends exactly where you need to get to. One route is to go down Gower, left on Montague and follow that around the back of the museum before crossing Great Russell to get onto Bury Pl, follow that down then left on High Holborn (briefly joining C52), right on Newton St., left at the end of that onto the B402, stay on that to cross Kingsway and head to the top of Lincoln's Inn fields, then from there either cut up to the left through the alley by Penderell's Oak to get to Holborn proper (across the street from the end of this video), or go the South way round Lincoln's Inn to get to the Chancery Lane area

  2. It’s amazing to see how much and how little has changed in the 30 years since I studied history at UCL. The β€˜new’ (it’s probably not any more) building just to the south of the Bloomsbury Theatre was an empty site when I was there but so much of the rest looks the same (ignoring the excellent cycle lanes).

  3. UCL has plans to pedestrianise Gordon Street + west side of Gordon Square in the medium ish term (should be by the end of the decade) as part of its 200th year anniversary refresh (which includes the main quad). This is good news as with HS2 in constant limbo — and more specifically the Euston Square / Euston Station link which would have involved a new tube exit at the northern end of Gordon Street effectively pedestrianising it at the intersection of Euston Road — the street will become a nice public space regardless.

  4. I wish I had known about this a few months ago, when I rode from St Pauls to Euston. I ended up going a bit further west before heading north, which was a mistake. Your way looks very pleasant!

  5. That's brilliant, thanks a bunch for the video! I've watched several videos even though they don't really depict routes I'm likely to travel, but I'll for sure use this one. Normally I just go via High Holborn and Gower Street, but this seems much nicer.

What do you reckon would be the best way to continue down to Fleet Street? Going around Lincoln's Inn Fields and down Chancery Lane seems nice, but it's a bit tricky to access without getting off and walking

  6. Ah, Lamb's Conduit Street. Little Amsterdam, as I like to think of it – if only everywhere else in London could have that lovely brick paving, traffic calming and narrow style. Lots of fancy wine shops there now, too.

  7. I always find it frustrating that there's no easy and safe way from where you end the ride across the road and then through the buildings to Lincoln's Inn fields. Maybe Camden could requre any new buildings to include this?
