Basic bicycle cable cutters, for brake/shift cables, will cut this. By cutting into the plastic portion with a knife, it’s one less cut with the cable cutter.
I’m guessing the thief was interrupted or was planning to come back. You’re lucky to still have your bike. 20-30 more seconds and that cable was defeated.
Get a U-lock, it will take a battery powered cutter to defeat. So one minute with lots of noise, vs 45 seconds and silent.

Looks accidental more than anything and who knows how it happened.
One of the reasons I’d guess accidental as well is because if you’re using that as a locking system, odds are your bike isn’t worth stealing. Not to anyone using a tool, and if they did have a tool or tools, that lock couldn’t hold up to a sturdy pair of scissors so it’s not like they got stuck/interrupted half-way through and gave up lol

It looks like someone tried to steal your ride. Get a U-Lock. They’re not perfect; but they deter most thieves. Don’t skimp on security and buy a decent one. Also, not trying to be a wise-guy; but, robbery implies breaking into a structure with the intent to steal something where as theft is the taking of an item with the intent to deprive you of it. Sorry, I used to be in law enforcement; and my mind goes there on occasion. Upgrade your security measures and ride safely. Peace, man. It’s all about the journey and not the destination, so don’t obsess. If someone wants your ride, they’ll probably get it, so make it as difficult for them as you can.

Take this as a prompt to get a U-lock. At the very least, it will be obvious when someone takes an angle grinder to it. Usually the kind of thief who will use it, will steal higher value bikes than yours.

I don’t think this is a robbery attempt. Even a knife would score the metal braids and leave identifying marks. Part of me also hopes humanity has enough brain power to identify metal cable through clear plastic housing.

My first thought was friction, but upon closer inspection that cut is way too smooth. Someone thought they could cut your cable with a pocket knife. They found out they couldn’t and gave up. Upgrade your lock situation before they come back with better tools.

Not really. It looks like something was rubbing. This was on a car rack in transit, correct? Could it have rubbed against that or rubbed against your tire while riding?

No, it looks like wear. Like it’s mounted on your bike in a way that something rubs on it.

Not only is it too clean, you can see the marks perpendicular to the cable. For sure it was just rubbing on something.
That said, I would get a more secure lock. A cable is very easy to cut through if someone has the tools.

These cable locks are very easy to cut with bolt cutters, consider a u-lock or a thick chain lock.
