Jeanne Louise Calment was a French woman who holds the record for the longest documented human lifespan. Here’s a summary of her extraordinary life:

Early Life and Family
Jeanne was born on February 21, 1875, in Arles, France. She came from a bourgeois family and enjoyed a life of leisure, never having to work. In 1896, at the age of 21, she married her double second cousin, Fernand Nicolas Calment. They had one daughter, Yvonne, born in 1898.

Lifestyle and Habits
Despite her longevity, Jeanne’s lifestyle wasn’t particularly health-focused:

She smoked cigarettes from age 21 until she was 117.
She claimed to eat 2.5 pounds of chocolate per week.
She enjoyed a daily nightcap.
She took care of her skin with olive oil and powder.

Jeanne was known for her active lifestyle. She took up fencing at 88, rode her bicycle daily until she was over 100, and lived independently until she was 110.

Notable Events
At age 13, she reportedly met Vincent van Gogh, describing him as “ugly as sin, had a vile temper and smelled of booze.”

In 1965, at 90 years old, she entered into a famous real estate deal known as a “viager” with a 47-year-old lawyer.

She became the oldest living person in 1988 at age 112.

Later Years and Death
Jeanne moved into a nursing home at age 110 but maintained a high degree of autonomy. She remained mentally sharp and was known for her witty remarks. On her 120th birthday, when asked about her future, she quipped, “A very short one”.
Jeanne Calment passed away on August 4, 1997, at the remarkable age of 122 years and 164 days. Her longevity has been the subject of much scientific interest and study.
