Today, we’ll do a scavenger hunt by bike in the city of Asheville, North Carolina, which scored a 9/100 for bikeability. Of course, I’m using Google Maps to get everywhere, and so it’s not going to take us on the best routes. But does it truly deserve this low rating?

Thank you, advocates who work thanklessly to improve bicycling for the rest of us. Due to your efforts, Asheville will continue to get better and better for those on two wheels. https://ashevilleonbikes.com

  1. Hey man, hope you're all right after Helene. My mom, dad, brother and sister all live in Asheville and my father described the situation as "Apocalyptic." They haven't been able to find supplies or relocate. I'm just happy they weren't harmed. Perhaps when large areas are repaired, things can be made more bike- friendly.

  2. as someone from nearby that area,
i went on a family trip about 12 years ago to the grand canyon, we drove through colorado to get to arizona.
one of the things we noticed on that trip was the excessive amount of bikers we saw through that area of the country
we then coined an inside joke that whenever we saw someone biking along the highway we would have to say "this isnt colorado" to ourselves
with that preamble out of the way,
this isnt colorado why are you biking through asheville whats wrong with you

  3. This video demonstrates exactly the problem that happens world-wide, when priority and convenience is taken away from people and alternative modes or transport, and given to private motor vehicles.

  4. It always amazes me how people fear anything that's new to them. They fear trains coming out of the city because it will "bring crime" to the suburbs, they fear bike lanes and pedestrian walkways because it interferes with traffic, it goes on and on. All of these things bring people who are moving slowly through the business districts, which is always GREAT for local businesses. I can't think of one American city where there are tons of folks in the area on foot or bikes where the area is riddled with crime or depressed.

  5. Really enjoyed this one, hope to see more like it! I just looked up my city's bikeability score and was surprised to see as high as 30.. We got a 58 in access to major retail which surprises me the most. Most of the major shopping is near impossible to bike to, however it's actually located in an adjacent township so it isn't even counted for this rating. On the interactive map the whole city is in the red stress zone except for downtown and a north and south neighborhood.. I should learn more about how they rate that bc the stress level should be highest factor no matter where you are going.
