    Stripped BB shell – is my LBS full of sh…? (more context in comments)

      So a friend of mine is in this nightmare situation. His LBS clearly crossthreaded his BB. Guy didn’t notice it and rode 200km’s with it. Now the BB shell is completely stripped. I assume chasing new threads is impossible. LBS denies it’s their fault, claiming this is just “wear” (what i think is 100% BS because threads on BB’s don’t wear because they… are not supposed to move!). They are not suggesting alternative solutions. I stumbled upon “repair BBs” for these kinds of situation. Has anyone tried going from threaded -> threadless BB? Would a Token Ninja do the trick, for instance? Wouldn’t you need to have a perfectly flat surface in the BB shell if you want to install one of those? Advice more than welcome. What should LBS do for him? Aren’t they insured for these kinds of situations?

      Got a photo with everything removed?

      I cant imagine how hard it would of been to cross thread and entire BB when installing..

      Have you pulled the BB out to see if they even used a threaded bb? Theoretically you can braze material in the shell and cut threads again. That said I’d probably just use one of those thread together bb. If it was my bike I would get compensation. This doesn’t just happen when a threaded BB is properly installed.

      So yeah, that’s not good. Take that thing apart en post pictures of the inside. Hopefully something else is going on there.

      That much movement makes it hard to believe it’s only been stripped. I would almost guess it was over tightened and the threaded part of the BB separated from the bearing cup and it’s all just held together by the crank.

      You shouldn’t touch the bike as in trying to remove or check w/e because then the workshop can claim it’s your fault though it’s completely theirs.

      200km of riding but when was it installed? That can matter on how your friend wants to pressure the shop to fix their wrongs.

      I’ve sold an English threaded frame before. The customers shop cross threaded one side.

      The solution I suggested was to cut Italian threads in the damaged side. This worked out for them. You’ll need a good shop that has to tools to do this.

      The Campagnolo BB tool would keep everything in alignment.
