2024 BMW S 1000XR. BMW have worked some magic with the S1000XR for 2024, and although the changes are small the impact is really noticeable in a positive way. Also, the standard specification has been greatly improved to include the following (this is just some of the list): Ride modes pro, Keyless ride, Headlight Pro with cornering light function, Intelligent emergency call, USB charging port and several other features, (please visit the BMW website for full details for your geographical location).
The suspension and the comfort levels are now much better, and I really enjoyed my time with the 2024 S 1000XR.
Simply put, it’s an amazing motorbike that has really improved over the outgoing Generation 1 (2015 – 2019) model and the mid-term updated Generation 2 (2020 – 2023) model. I have had so much fun on this motorbike that it’s a genuine option for me in the future when its time to change my 2021 R1250GS Rallye.
I highly recommend going to your local BMW dealership and booking a test ride. Just make sure the dealership you use FULLY understands all the options and accessories and packs that can be fitted / ordered so that YOU have the best chance of ordering the perfect motorbike, in the right configuration for your riding requirements.

That bike needed replacing carl too many issues that bm still havent solved and thats not good enough at the price the pegs are in the way when staionary its top heavy the thrittle response isnt good gsa is way better
Looks like a lot of other bikes on the road, the gs and gas has a more presence on the road I don’t need a bike to rev the nuts off ! Great vids Carl 👍
I never rode one but i feel that this doesnt have much grunt compared to the multistrada 1200?
Another impressing video! Impressing because I can understand you (and your wife) ! I learnd english in school (50 years ago) and I 'm often disappointed, listening to english speaking (or should I say mumbling) people. Even if I don't like the BMW XR very much (I'm a boxer-engine-fan) I like your Videos soooo much, because I don't need the undertiteling in German or english! And I have seen a lot of interesting content about the 1250. Keep on youtubing, Carl !!! 👍👍👍
Thank you for the video Carl.
How would this XR compare with the Ducati Multistrada V4s if you have ridden one. It would be interesting to know because the V4 puts out 170hp as well but has more torque at 125nm and has more suspension travel too.
Cheers
Hi Carl,
You didn´t discuss price and value for money compared to the R13GS but bangs per buck this looks like a better proposition ? And I bet that the luggage doesn´t fall off….
Greetings from E and me!
Industry can learn a lot right now by building a daily driver and creating commonality across all platforms so as to get items in people's hands that they can personally "keep up" or maintain and insoding create proper feedback from internet World as for example how good are the tires on these machines? What about a suspension that will never quit? How about riding comfort over long days or even weeks and months? What is the best way to keep road debris from impacting the machine? Not saying "don't care there" with all of this exclusive design work etc but DO go there by say going back to the F800 and create a big that is meant to be ridden forever😊
My 22 XR has been fine other than for an initial electrical problem when wet. Its not a petfect bike but it comes close. If you ride a GS then i cant see an XR being your thing. But we are all different.
Nice review !
for someone who wants to go on the road it’s a potential alternative and probably should be considered instead of the gs, However the gs for all surface travel is leaps and bounds ahead of the xr. I use mine in all surfaces in all weathers from tarmac to gravel/mud etc and the gs vs xr isn’t a comparable conversation. I found the xr a very buzzy bike and didn’t rate it at all.
Hi Carl, really enjoyed this video and seeing how impressed both you and Sandra are with the latest model! Thank you for the mention too 😊 As it happens ive just completed a 330 mile ride on mine today, from St Malo to Bordeaux!! Going to Barcelona tomorrow so itll be another 350+ miles 🛣 My Gen 2 XR is taking it all in its stride 💪👍 I'll drop a line in a day or two, cheers!
Great review, very thorough yet again from you. Answers almost everything that a buyer would ask. Well done.
For me, I do like the new bike, but the reason I didn't buy it was that it has a chain, and I am sick of doing chain checks on my big tours (often 7-800kms perday, 4000 in a week) and carrying lube etc. Shaft is so much easier to tour with. But local hills rides, brilliant.
Great review as usual Carl, a friend of mine has recently bought the M version & I think I would get into serious trouble with either, so I will stick with the GS 👍
When they throw a shaft on the XR series … BMW will have ‘the ultimate bike’
Nice Video Carl, looks like an animal of a machine that f you want it to be 😂😂😂
Hi Carl. I have a 1200 GS Rallye which is an awesome bike for two up touring. I’ve been considering an XR as I loved my sons Gen 1 XR, but as you said it was a bit “hardcore” for two up touring. The 1200 GS is fine in “road mode” with a pillion, and then requires “dynamic” mode when adding luggage which while firm, is also compliant.
Do you think the XR would be OK in road mode with a pillion, and assuming dynamic would be required with a pillion and luggage, do you think it would retain some of the “compliance” of the GS, or would it be less comfortable? Hope that makes sense!
I have gone from 2020 te to 2024 lowered te , I totally agree with what you said about all these small changes has improved the bike massively overall
Not a GS replacement for me, too tall. I was keen for one, but the R1300GS with Adaptive Vehicle Height and low seat is just right for us aging shorties.
I switched from multistrada1260 to gen2 XR and my main decision was, more sport, lesser all road. Sportier riding position, narrow bars. The only downside is little torque in low rpm. You really have to rev this bike to enjoy, but that's no problem for me. I do regularly trackdays here in Assen and there I can enjoy the full sportive character. Hi revs, best braking bike I've ever ridden, easy to turn, yet very stable at high speed corners and you already mentioned good bodyposition is possible for the track. And what about that supersmooth quickshifter! To make things better less turbulence on the highway I bought a mra vario spoiler type C. It's brilliant
Hello, very good informative video about the 2024XR, I can only agree with your comments, I have had the XR for a few weeks and love it! Only the windshield is a disaster and I'm now testing other shields, but despite all my efforts I can't get rid of the wind in the area under the neck, no matter which version I try! I am 184 cm. Turbulence on the helmet is not the problem…Greetings from Austria
The dream team are back at it. Epic review.
I like that bike. The motor is fire 🔥
Thanks for the review.
Derrière numbness test: How long did you, as the rider, continuously sit in saddle (hours)?
It’s nowhere near an alternative to the GS.
It’s a great bike, fast with a comfortable riding position but it’s basically an RR with an upright riding position and more clearance but I wouldn’t think of taking that thing off road, not even dirt graded roads!
I bought end of July the same version of XR and I’m very happy and smiling while riding 😅 . It makes me smile and scream,as well. I fully recommend this updates version to the sports riders . I also tested the 23 version and didn’t like it, either. But ı also recommend you to change the tyre to min pirelli Rosso 4 . Because the T32 is the worst one of this bike .
Nice bike. Totally unrelated but what happened to the gear change mod video for the 1250gs you promised.
mai 2020 i bought my very first bike ever, the showroom example of the S1000XR (mj2019, triple black), and straightaway started to commute in the Brussels Antwerp area. The bike now has over 100 000 kms on the clock, as i commute al year all weather and still every ride (almost) ends with a big grin over my face.
I bought one with the touring screen , it was ok but there was some buffeting at motorway speeds. I changed to the standard screen and added a secondary screen deflector which was essentially perfect, better protection than the touring screen alone and no buffetting. Haven't fit the touring screen since.
I have a 2019 triple black and have zero vibrations. Smoothest bike ever. I think this vibration thing has been quite overblown. I just wish the front fork was a little stiffer with less travel on twisties. But hey, it's not a super sport bike. I have done trips where I was 10 hours a day on the saddle and with a big aftermarket screen (the GS is amazing for wind management) and a nice cushy seat you are good to go, total tourer. Really enjoyed your video.
Had my 2024 XR love it, great comfort, great ergonomics! Just done four days in France perfect. 6000 miles, done. A very sweet handling all rounder! 👍🏻
BUT this bike doesn't have shaft drive and hydraulic clutch…I'll keep my 1250GS!
Haven’t laughed so much for a while. Your infectious. You should be the MC at any wedding 😆😆
