[Short STORY]: I began biking back and fourth to work on a Walmart Hyper Havoc 21 Speed bike. Snow, Rain, Wind, Shine. I’d bike back and fourth on it for 2 years. Doing maintenance and upkeep.
So for my 26th birthday I treated myself to another class of bike. 24 speed Trek Alpha 4900. Boy, is it a change from my ol’ reliable bike; to this. Definitely worth the extra bit of cash for something more reliable.

Fellow 4900 owner here! Trek really nailed it with this bike. I’ve had it for well over a decade now and have done nothing more than basic maintenance. This bike will hold together longer than I will. The fork needs work, but doesn’t negatively impact anything otherwise.

Congrats! Quality machinery is awesome. Funny story though… after a couple of years on my Walmart “Schwinn”, I moved on to Trek, then Diamondback, then Specialized… and now I’m back on a Walmart bike, this time a Kent. What I found? If you ride a lot in places with moisture in the air, you will have frequent maintenance issues no matter what bike. And heck, a new Walmart bike every 6 months is still cheaper than maintaining my Specialized (which I’ve hung onto for now). Plus, when thieves are picking over bikes in the rack, presumably they’ll skip over the Walmart special, unless they’re just in it for a free joy ride. In which case that Kryptonite U-Bolt might not be worth the trouble. That’s the theory I’m going with anyway.

Sweet ride you got yourself there. If you are using it for road riding try to find some slick tyres that will fit your rims and I swear you’ll thank me for the hint. If you are using it for off-road as well it gets a bit trickier, as you need to either swap the tyre or have a seperate rim set.
