  1. Late 70’s or early 80’s, probably, based on the logo and the fact that it has reflectors. They made these bikes very similarly for decades, including the cottered crankset and rod brakes. There will be a date code on the rear hub with a month and year, it’s usually the same year as the bike.

It’d be worth that price if you really want one of these, but it’s not a good price for flipping it unless are in a major metro area with a lot of cyclists.

Edit: not sure but I might see 78 stamped into the hub?

  2. These are still pretty common but not in this shape. Only the shifter’s been replaced on this one. There were a pair of these in our local city paper last month for $200. Same shape etc. Men’s and Women’s. I had a few commuters who we serviced who rode them but not since around 2012. I had one customer many years ago (commuter) who must’ve ridden it for 8 seasons until it got stolen. There’s quite a bit of fabrication we do to ensure good tolerances etc. I’ve repaired these since ’77. If you don’t have a Vanadium cotter pin press and a Kingsbridge tool for the drive side BB cup then it’s best to just wait and find someone who has. You could make the Kingsbridge but the press is has to be at least high grade tool steel.

  3. Although the design dates to the 1930s, these bikes were made until the early 1980s. The date will be stamped on the 3-speed hub.

  4. I had a 69 sports that looked similar, but did not have rod brakes. Unless it’s some sort of reissue, I’d say it is at least older than 1969.

  5. Raleigh DL-1. This one is identical — complete with the reflectors and ESGE kickstand — to those our shop sold when I was a shop rat in the mid- to late 1970s. This is one of the batch exported from UK and sold in the U.S. in the 1970s to early 1980s.

  6. That rear Sturmey Archer hub will have the year stamped. 1960s-70s I think. Look for 2-number stamp, which will be the year most likely.

What an interesting brake setup :/

Also obligatory fuck cotter pins, especially the current counterfeit ones.
