Should my rear brake cable here be passing through that metal square on the chainstay?
If not, what is that for?
If yes, perhaps that’s why my cables run close to the chainring and have needed to be cable-tied? (Ref earlier post)

The square thing is for the hub shifting cable that goes through a pulley that is fixed there.
That metal square is for the cable pulley assembly used on hub gear models – as you have a 2 speed you don’t have it
Your routing is correct for the brake cable
