

Picked up a threadless fork with a cut steerer tube and I’m trying to make it work with this Trek frame. Is there any rule of thumb for the max distance below the top of the stem that the steerer tube can be? I’m at about 5mm now with zero spacers. Stem takes up about 40mm. I remember someone saying they made a special slim stem for these issues? Thanks!

Rule of thumb is the steerer tube sticking out a few millimeters above the stem… Don’t wanna make any half baked assumptions on how risky this would be exactly but I’d say be careful and don’t run it like this.
Metal steerer and metal stem, steerer still ends above topmost stem bolt, that’s a clear send it.
Generally if the top of the steerer tube is above the top stem bolt, you’re fine. If you’re worried about it, take a spacer out from under the stem
5mm or so is fine. It still looks like it’s above the top pinch bolt. All is good
That headset bearing looks pretty massive. If it can be replaced it’s worth checking with the local bike shop if they can offer something with a shorter profile.

looks good to me! it’d be nice to have some extra steerer there but this is rideable.
Top stem bolt looks like it’s below the end of the steerer tube, so that’s send-ish for me, but your better bet would be to fit a lower profile headset. That’s HUGE!

Looks like if it were any longer than that it would need a spacer, mine has a bigger gap than that lol. Absolutely don’t worry about it as long as it’s above the top bolt.

It’s fine. The top pinch bolt is clearly below the forks top edge.
That’s probably the max I would allow this. But allowed nonetheless
