Tire is the cheap version Conty 5K which has a about 1500-2000 miles (~2500km) on it since the end of April. Usually run it at 100 PSI (689kpa).
Right out the door on my most recent ride I heard the cursed TIK TIK TIK of debris lodged in the rubber. I examined the front tire to find this. it looks like it melted or something. I was able to scrape the pebbles out and I rode on expecting a flat. (Was just ripping laps in the park where I could easily walk home). I rode cautiously and wound up putting up 35 miles. At the end of the ride this spot had so thoroughly vanished from the tire I couldn't even locate the spot again.
What the heck is going on here?

Did you ride through any fresh tar/chipseal, or was it particularly hot? Could have been gum that has been sufficiently stained by dirt/debris too.
You picked up road grime.
