So, I'm converting my commuter bike (90's trek 850) from a 3×7 to a 1×9. I ordered a freehub body (8-10 spd) but the part of the wheel it attaches to is much smaller on the 7 speed body/wheel. I havent seen this listed as a specification when looking at different freehubs and it wasn't specified in the Shimano exploded view (that I could tell, I could just not know what to look for). I also haven't seen places (blogs, videos, posts) mention this as a consideration in compatibility. Anybody know if I can get a compatible 8-10 speed freehub body?

Freehub bodies are very specific to the hub model – even within a brand they may not fit different models.
So you need to order the specific freehub for your specific model of hub.
Shimano’s exploded view should also state the part number.
And also, if your hub was sold as a 7-speed hub, it is very unlikely that Shimano offered a replacement freehub in the 8,9,10 size as well.
If you’re lucky manufacturers will make a like-for-like replacement. On the higher end modern brands, they’ll make freehubs to swap between HG, MicroSpline, and XD. But with Shimano, it’s just a like-for-like replacement.
