Just poking around and I see that the Surly Long Haul Trucker is no longer. The newer [Disc Trucker](https://surlybikes.com/bikes/disc_trucker) has hydraulic brakes which made me wonder:
Is it wrong to think that hydraulic brakes – rather than mechanical disc brakes – for a truly long tour (TransAm, etc.) are a bad idea since hydraulics are not really “field serviceable”?

For tours through the US/Europe, you’re rarely more than ≈50 miles from a bike shop. Sure, you may have a pretty rough day, but it’s manageable.
If I were crossing Asia or Africa again, no possible way I’d use hydraulics
