The Dutch Reach is a simple change of habit that can save lives.

Every year, at least 500 people across England, Wales and Scotland are injured when someone opens a car door into their path – but the actual figure is much higher, as many collisions aren’t reported.

The Dutch Reach encourages you to open your car door safely. Instead of using the hand closest to the door, reach across with the hand furthest from the door – your left hand if you’re a driver (in the UK).

By using the Dutch Reach, you naturally turn your body towards the window, helping you spot approaching cyclists and other oncoming traffic. It also allows you to open the door slowly and carefully, rather than swinging it open in one movement.

  2. If the cycle paths along the road are driven on the other side of the road, the motorist can see the cyclist coming and wait with the door open. The Cyclist sees the driver and can react more alertly. Then the cyclists do not come from behind the car, but visibly from the front. In many cases, fewer accidents will happen because many drivers are alone in the car and the cyclist then meets the passenger side and passes. When the driver stops and gets out without a passenger, no door opens on the right and the cyclist passes the car unhindered. When a rear passenger wants to get off on the right, which is safer due to other traffic, the driver can warn the passenger of an approaching cyclist.
It would be a lot safer for cyclists in this way.
