I’m a long time hiker, climber, wild camper and canoe camper but recently I’ve got into bikes. So I thought I’d give this bikepacking thing a go!

I decided to start small so I could make my mistakes on a smaller scale so just did a 1 nighter in good weather cycling around the UK’s Lake District on a GT Grade gravel bike.

I had a lot of fun and did indeed make some mistakes including buying a super light pump that was absolutely shit. Got a puncture in a really bad location had to walk 7 miles to the nearest town to get it sorted!

But I got back on the road and the show went on.

I’ve definitely caught ‘the bug’ and I’m planning many more ambitious trips. Already bought myself a larger and actually functional pump. Plus, I am done with puncture repair kits on the road, going to be bringing some spare tubes next time.

I’ll be soaking up the wisdom of the sub in the meantime. I’m sure there are plenty more mistakes out there for me to make.

  1. Cracking photos bud! Always worth having a spare inner tube…

I like your tarp set up, what poncho is it? I use a Rab silnylon but never actually set it up properly, your structure looks perfect to keep the worst off a bivy bag… Doesn’t help the stealth camping game tho. Me and two mates got busted by a warden this week3nd just gone so stealth is becoming a priority now!!

  2. Definitely consider tubeless vs tubes. It’s likely you wouldn’t have even noticed the puncture. Nice trip!
