Hello.

I'm looking to get my first bike and I have essentially narrowed it down to two bikes based on my budget.

The bike would be for casual weekend rides around the city and short commutes to work/grocery store/etc.

One is the Trek FX1 Gen 3

The other one is the MEC Midtown 2 on sale for $599 CAD

I do not know much/anything about bikes so it is hard for me to make an informed decision about this. The only difference is that with the shipping fee included, the Trek bike comes out to ~$40 more expensive than the MEC one.

If anyone can help me make a decision, that would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hydraulic discs on the MEC bike is a big plus. Disc brakes are an absolute must for commuting in Canada in my opinion, at least if you will be commuting year round in poor weather. But usually bikes in this price bracket come with mechanical disc brakes which are not as effective as hydraulic discs. For either bike, are you not able to purchase in-person? I would definitely suggest going to the store to buy rather than buying online if this is an option for you.
